As this was officially our last Social League event for the year it was much anticipated by the entrants for a few weeks. The attendance list before the event was the longest list of any of our events. We even had our North Coast stalwart Nic the Braai Man book accommodation at Pennington so that he did not have to drive. That is real KZN Fishing dedication for you. I must say when members make that kind of gesture it must bide well for the future of KZN Fishing. There were over 30 Anglers that took to Sezela, under the flag of KZN Fishing. Most of the locals were wondering what was going on as we had taken over the entire car park. It was also nice to see some new faces and we welcome them to our family.
A early start saw most of the anglers on the beach. Registration was painless and soon all the entrants were on the beach. As usual a few minutes before the competition one of most famous Junior KZN anglers lands the first fish. Emmanuel picks up a puffer fish at 6.55 am. A few large black tails were caught and soon there were live baits in the water. The rest of the morning was relatively quite till Andy’s reel takes off. He lets the fish take line and soon he is on with what we assume is a flattie. A few minutes and the fish takes him to some rocks and his line parts, well I guess that this is fishing.Emmanuel releasing his first ever tagged fish
Shaan starts his outing with a puffer fish. To most anglers that fish is considered bad luck. But in Shaan’s case he is adamant that it is his good luck fish. He soon lands two junior Catface Rockcods and a the rainbow from the sea a Natal Wrasse. At about 9.00 am we break up for Casting advice and soon everyone is showing the crowds how its done. Few tips and different leaders soon have the guys looking’s for distance. Jan with his effortless casting soon shows the guys how it’s done . Several members spent the next hours learning new or established knots. There was serious mixing of ideas and some really interesting discussion of Reels. We also looked at some new reels lent to KZN Fishing from South Den Tackle. These reels are nearly half the price of the famous brands and really proved themselves during some casts. Another revelation during the casting clinic was that Shaan could outcast many of the Multiplier casts with his spinning reel filled with braid. One measured cast was close to 90 metres. It just shows that you really do not need expensive reels , rods and braid to achieve results. We will be looking at these cheaper alternatives as we go along. I know Shaan will be doing a write up on one of those reels which will appear on the sponsors thread. After a few birdnests and a few lost sinkers attention went back to the fishing. Paul brought in for testing some red mullets. This was discussed in the thread. These mullets are eating quality but looked for baits. As there were no takers Nic and Joe were going to continue some trials. As the fishing conditions started worsening Cameron tried some brave fishing on some rocks. He was trying really hard to score some points. As the sky started to threaten Nic decided it was time to start the fire. The Braai was the usual success. Everyone got the chance to sample Andy’s famous sauces. Whilst most of the guys still had their baits in the water waiting for a pull the socializing continued for several hours. And this was to be the end of a successful day out with the KZN Fishing family.
