The What Was Meant To Be Sezela But Ended Up Being Reunion Corner League Report.

After huge swells and strong winds forced Manco to change the venue for this event from Sezela to Addington cars began rolling in from about 06H15 and we were almost predictably met with a stunning daybreak with the sun climbing slowy over the horizon over a glassy flat sea with barely a breath of wind.

Before Jace and Joe arrived a number of guys said they felt that we needed to consider the possibility of all of us moving to Sezela after all. Fortunately when Jace was asked to make the call, Vischal came to the rescue and it was decided that we would fish a section of Reunion Corner in Isipingo only accessible from behind the SAPREF refinery where Vischal works. As we prepared to leave, Khani's car decided it wasn't prepared to change venues and began overheating, effectively ending his hopes of joining us.

The little convoy of around 15 vehicles sped along the highway and came to a stop in the parking at the entrance to the refinery where after signing in we received a short security briefing form Vischal before we headed down to the beach.

The venue was excellent with a large sandy beach, well known for its Garrick, Kingy, Shad and flatfish catches and some wonderful rock structures. Unfortunately though, the rough seas and strong winds of the previous few days meant that even though we had flat seas on the day the fishing was still going to be very difficult.

Around 60% of the guys opted to fish the rocky area and most managed to land some fish. Sadly not too many made the minimum length of 20 cm so they did not qualify for points. Jace had a double-up with two Karanteen and Paul soon followed suite with a double-up of small Mullet. Andy was into the fish almost on every throw and by far caught the most fish for the day but only 3 made the size limit. Some of the smallest Blacktails ever seen, Karanteen and Mullet were the main species caught from the rocks although a few Sergeant Majors and a few others were landed too. Paul also managed to catch an absolutely minute little Rock Cod.

Meanwhile on the beach things were a lot slower but this was where the better fish for the day came out. Early on the word spread that a ray had been caught far down the beach, but as we soon learned it was in fact Rishi who had landed a Lesser Sandy. Then it was our host Vischal’s turn. He went on with a big fish but unfortunately could not keep it on and before I could even get a pic of the fight it was over. Not long after a Cape Stumpnose was landed by Unash. At around halfway through t the day Nic sent a small mullet out over the shore break and close to the edge of the rocks. While standing and chatting with a group of the guys his rod bent almost double before the tip bounced up and down a few times. By the time Nic had run down the beach back to his rod the action was over and his Mullet had been neatly “nicked” by what most believed could only have been a Garrick.

As the competition drew to a close the members headed back to the car park to settle down for the now traditional braai and chat session. Nic had snuck off the beach early to get the fire going and as is now the norm, the traditional KZN braai master David was soon manning the tongs . While everyone was enjoying a few drinks the Cape Stumpie was kindly donated to the cause and was soon cleaned, filleted and wrapped in foil to join the awesome hot mutton sausage and chops on the braai. Cornel had supplied a deadly spicy sauce, now also a part of the tradition at these events.

Emanuel was quick to inform us that he had also managed to land two fish for the day, 1 Karanteen and 1 Mullet, and as usual did better that many of the adults.

As usual the conversation around the fire was one of the highlights of the day even though some of the regular faces like Calvin, Khani , Jan,Jackie and Shuan T couldn’t join us.

A big thank you goes out to Vischal for organizing the venue. I have no doubt that had it been any other day we would all have landed monsters. To Cornel, thank you for a demon sauce. It was sooooo good that our infamous Web Master, (who was late as usual ;) )was eating it on bread rolls long before the meat was ready, and also to Nic for the usual supply of OBS that had most of us in an early party mood.
